HOTEL RATES: Why are they PER PERSON

As a diver now, I have noticed it seems booking HOTELS/RESORTS seem to be MORE expensive versus being a ’regular person’ who didn’t dive.

All the rates seem to be PP (Per person) which means they could easily get as much at $1,600 for the week for two people in one room.

I want to take my 14 y/o son on a trip to Roatan, but they (AKR) want to charge me $1,199 for me as a diver (understandble) and $1,129 for my son, who will be neither diving nor snorkling (under THEIR rates/programs). My BEEF is, WHERE IS THE CHILDREN’S RATE??? WHERE is the discount for NOT diving? I think it is completely absurd, to almost ’punish’ the non diver and then ’kill’ the diver by making them share in the expense of such a rate!

I can’t remember the last time I stayed at a hotel as a tourist, but it was something like $80-150 per night with unlimited people.

It just seems to me that this PP rate, really seems to bend people over and you know what...

Does anyone else feel that these rates are RETARDED way to run a hotel?

Dive resort rates per person are a bit crazy...and I think that’s one of those things that should change given the slump of the travel industry. I can understand charging a bit more for the extra water and laundry another person creates...and the food they consume if it’s an all-inclusive resort, but it’s crazy to expect people to pay per person rates when you’re using the same hotel room!

I agree there should be child and non-diver rates available everywhere!

Diving isn’t the only time I travel with hotels or condos or whatever type of lodging. I think you have landed on something here that I hadn’t really noticed, other than package trips being listed per person with double or quad occupancy expected.

I tend to shop around and don’t always stay at a resort facility. Sometimes it’s the best option, but if they are so outrageous in rates, then I look for other options that may allow me to stay longer if I like.

Now that I am thinking about this I will probably pay a bit more attention to it. When I do book somewhere else for a specific reason I let the primary outfitter know why. Figure that’s the only way the market will drive products at prices we find approachable.

Happy diving all, but it’s now snowboarding season... so that’s really where my attention lays.. lol

We could just buy our own ocean front Hotel/Resort catering to divers, offer great rates (well below the other guys), and offer super discounts to Divebuddy members. :)

Hey there, i just would like to share what we have here in Philippines concerning hotel and dive rates. Here its per night and not per person. It doesnt matter how many are there in one room. Also, there’s differences between divers and non-divers. Divers always get discounts even in hotel rates. :) and Brian always say, its cheap "here". hehehhehe

Yea, ok. As if anyone cared what I think....

Here is what I think.

The tourist industry is like any other industry. If you want them to offer you what you want, you have either of two choices:

1) Pay what they want .

or

2) Go somewhere else where they will give you what you want.

Personnally, I have found that if you pay them what they want, they will just charge you more the next time you want to go there.

The thing is, that you have to let them know that you considered their place, but because of "what ever the reason is" you chose to go elsewhere. Don’t assume that they will know.

This approach does two things:

1) It lets the vendor/resort, etc... know why they are loosing your business.

and

2) It restores the control of the market to the consumer. (You)

But what do I know.

This is just my opinion.

Most DIVE Resorts cater to divers....they would prefer to book divers....if they offered a substantial discount for non divers then they would turn into a non divers hotel....just my 2 pesos :-)

West End/West Bay in Roatan has hotels smaller resorts where they are possibly a better bargin. Some of the rates are per room http://www.roatan.com/catalog/honduras/hframeset.htm

Here on Bonaire we charge a room rate if you want accommodations only and then have different package rates that incorporate diving, vehicle, taxes, meet & greet and etc. Our room rate is based on 2 persons in a room and NOT per person. We use this same rate when configuring our packages. As for children, we offer 11 and under free accommodations when staying with a parent in the same room.

Under stand that here on Bonaire when figuring a package for a "child" that is over 11, we need to figure in room taxes, water and electric, etc. Most "teenagers" use as much as much water, if not more while showering as a diver does. A "child" over the age of 11, as we have seen by experience that is certified and dives, does as much as the parent diver 99.9% of the time, hence the same pricing.

If you have a child that is a "non-diver" over the age of 11, then we charge him the "Stay and Drive Rate. I know, he/she may not drive, but we could always price out the room, vehicle, taxes, dive packages, etc and you will come up with the same as the package.

At least that is how we do it here.

I have read everyones comments and haveing a degree in sociology and a masters degree in education I think I can offer an intelligent explanation on why these resorts/hotels do this kind of thing. After looking at all the socio-economical aspects and using Gabe Mertons Anomie Theory, I have been able to deduce the reson for this common act. They are all stinkin’ crooks!

Realize also that in comparing an all inclusive resort like Anthony’s Key to a hotel is that more is included, including all food, drinks, etc.

I guess what program is your 14 year old going to do at Anthony’s Key while you are out diving? I think most families have their children enrolled in a program there too, so its a moot point.
