I agree with you completely. I have heard alot about my picture with mask on my head. I didn’t know until I moved to Jersey that the mask on your forehead was a signal for a diver in distress. I have heard alot about that picture, but to me it was just a great dive with guys from DiveOahu. I think topic should start an interesting discussion. I look forward to hearing other view points. ;-)

I think the profile photo should express who you are or show what you look like. It doesn’t need to be dive related. You should be on this site to meet other divers...but part of finding a good buddy is knowing what that person is about. And profile photos help to get an idea of what a person is like or looks like.

Well if I and others knew that Jeffrey Domer was a serial killer by looking at his appearance then I do not think he would have gotten away with killing as many as he did. Looks are not who a person is, but if you express yourself with a picture such as mine being my fish then it tells me that I like fish and care for fish. It does not show who I look like. Even though Brion wears his mask on his head and some have complained about it, it is overall a great picture and he surely does not appear to be in distress ! Maybe some people just like to have something to complain about or get bothered by as if there is not enough stuf in this world to complain about that is real important. Like the killing of Blue Marlin for the sport of it.

I agree with all of the above. I have been around for more than a few years and have been a member of countless organizations. Some of them were slowly taken over by the "purists" who insisted that everything be tightly related to the subject of interest. The result, members began to drop out, myself included. If any organization wants to survive and be vibrant it needs to be inclusive and open minded, Otherwise the purists just end up talking to the purists resulting in endless arcane arguments over which one is the purer!

Thank you, thank you, I could not have said it any better and that is why it needed to be said by you. As I put it, life is too short to worry about the small stuff !
Thank you

Well said from all! Anyone should be free to discuss more than diving here! If you don’t like what you read, quit reading it. I have been blasted by the thought police for wondering about nondiving stuff, but I have a great curiosity about a lot of things. Like h2ofria says, purists, have a corner, but not the whole darn site-share. Brion, sitting topside with mask on head, you sure do not look in distress (duh....!) And Beth, the pic of you is great!(This from another female!) I like to see nondiving pics, (keep it decent) it lets you learn about others....

Beth, I like your picture, but what only matters is if you like it. As I said earlier you cannot judge a person by the picture. And as far as other pics that may not be dive related do tell a little bit about the person and their interests. So as long as it is not nude, rude or offensive then for me it is okay.

I agree with you guys that the profile picture shouldn’t have to be just a picture of the person, like how I have my scuba shark image. I found that a few years back and started using it for my profile pic all over the place because I think it looks cool and I love diving and sharks, and esp. when the two are combined. I think another option could be that if you don’t want to use a person picture for your profile image, then if you could add at least one picture of yourself in your photo section on your profile. Then others could still see what you look like if they are wondering. Plus, it’s nice to be able to put a face with the profile that way it makes it easier to match people up, like this weekend at Scuba Show. I’m sure there will be a lot of us around to meet.
