I live a couple of blocks off the ocean in Saint Augustine, Florida. I was in a serious accident which has prevented me from being able to dive for the past 10 years. Before that, I’ve dove in the Florida Keys as well as off Fort Lauderdale and Pensacola, several Florida springs in the panhandle, San Diego, Long Beach, Catalina Island, Hawaii, the Philippines, Thailand, and the Great Barrier Reef off Australia’s east coast. I hope to one day get to try ice diving as well as dive the Red Sea. There’s a couple of warships sunk off the coast of Australia that I’d like to dive on seeing that participated in exercises with these same ships during RIMPAC exercises when they were in service (its surprising how many ships the Navy’s sunk that were not very old and still very serviceable (another massive waste of tax payer money, as these ships were built to last 50 years but only saw service for a bit over 20 - I’ve had cars older)). I also plan on getting into drysuit diving. I’m currently limited to 35’ depth due to ongoing an medical that I have hopes of getting resolved in the future (is a direct result of the aforementioned accident). I own all my own equipment as well as have some spare equipment, as I got certified in 1982. Some of the equipment I would like to learn to dive with is a rebreather, and if I ever get a buddy with some buying power, diving with an Ocean Reef full face dive mask system, as they allow verbal communication between divers as well as even allow divers to make cell phone calls while under water (way cool). I do have a boat of sorts...its a rather large jet ski with 260 hp, so it’ll get you where you want to go. But diving off a jet ski requires you to wear all your equipment for the ride out and back (which can be quite short if conditions are calm). If and when I take it to the Florida Keys, I would love for one person to accompany me, as its designed to hold three, but I’ll NEVER allow three on it.

I think I will be giving those places a shot, as I need a relatively safe place to get reacquainted with my favorite sport after being unable to dive for so long. I had purchased all new gear just prior to being hit, so I’m also looking forward to using it after a thorough inspection (finally). I do need a new dive suit, so I’m inclined to purchase a drysuit vice another wetsuit this time, as a drysuit can pretty much be used anywhere, as it’s insulation depends on What I choose to wear underneath. I’ve got a lot of titanium in my back, and those rods can get quit painful at even the slightest drop in temperature. I fully plan on making several checkout dives this summer. Thanks again.

SantaFeSandy - 6/04/2014 10:41 PM Hi Jeffrey, sounds like you’d be okay to dive Manatee Springs, Fanning Springs, Devil’s Den, parts of Blue Grotto, and for sure the Rainbow River drift dive. Alexander would be another good one for you.
