From Greg: Why does it cost $50-$100 million to build an off shore rig? For that much money, you’ld think you could move enough dirt to make an island. Honestly, does anyone know the process and requirements of building a rig off shore? Does a small jack-up rig really cost that much?...
Well you don’t want to go with the lowest bidder like the USAF did on the Texas Towers in the 50’s. They were not even watertight so when they went down they went all of the way down :(

I was a scope dope in 61 and had already heard stories of Old Shaky so when they asked if I wanted to go to a Texas Tower or AWACS I chose flying. The EC-121’s wintered in Bermuda and that’s when I started diving :)

There was a proposal to build floating power plants using the temperature difference between the surface and deep water to drive the turbines and that upwelling would bring in fish to feed. I thought the floats would be perfect for housing divers and the marine growth on the outside of the plant would soon be like diving an oil rig :)
