What is the biggest lionfish you have taken. We have taken several between 17 and 18 inches. I have heard of them in the 19 inch range.

I have never speared for lionfish. Sounds fun though. How much meat do you get off the big ones?

Have not weighed the fillets, but a 17 inch version will make two plates. The meat is awesome. We normally turn the smaller ones into ceviche. Go off the beaten path to the small spots for the big ones.

I don’t hunt them but have eaten some and they are very good. The only way to describe the taste is unique and not like other fish. A lot like chicken...had to say that hihi.

The thing that is amazing is how they got to where they are and so fast. I have seen them from Salt Cay TCI to Turneffe island Belize and West coast of Florida and the keys are overrun with them. I never been to the pacific but I suppose they are there too. The numbers are impressive like the picture in that boat and comparable size. The biggest I have seen underwater is a large coal black one off Salt Cay and guess in that 15+ range. Keep up the good work!

Eye opening stats, over 16k taken in florida derbys since 2009 reef.org/lionfish/derbies

From FtMyersTom: West coast of Florida

Meant the east coast. Not as many over here, not much reef system to feed on.

It is disappointing to see how fast these guys are moving through the waters. When I first got to Destin, I saw one and wasn’t set up to take him. My last dive there was a vacation when I went back, I saw several and I didn’t even get out into the gulf. Happy hunting
