Help!!!! Just got the order from the wife that we are headed to Maui, Hawaii for 10 days late July to first of August. We will be staying in the Kaanapali Beach area. Boat diving is clearly very expensive so we are looking to mix the best of boat and shore. Please advise on your top picks for the area. Also looking for a good outfit to book with. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My advice would be to figure out how to do one boat trip, to the Island of Lanai, to see the Cathedrals. Very close to you and I can’t recommend them more highly is Lahaina Divers. If you did that and then did a shore dive at Black Rock reef in Kaanapali (enter at Sheraton’s beach) that would be a pretty complete trip in my mind. But the shore dive won’t even come close to the Lanai and the Cathedrals. Check out their video: http://www.lahainadivers.com/content/lanai-scuba-diving-with-lahaina-divers

Two dives for $129 is well worth it. Have a blast!

Thanks ScubaRich. I was starting to see those two locations as "must see". I saw a video on youtube from the Cathedrals - fantastic! Black Rock is also very convenient and high on the list. Many thanks!

Hi- I would recomend visiting one or two of the Maui Dive Shops { many locations }. You can pick up rental tanks and a map showing the shore dive locations around the island. If you chat up the guys working the shop you may be able to hook up with other shore divers. I would also recomend Maui Diamond as a great dive op. I have used them many times and have always been happy.

Many thanks - sounds like you have done a number of dives there. One question - does one need a dive guide for shore dives? Thanks!

Hi- Regarding a dive guide. I think its always a good idea to have a guide when you are diving a location that is new to you. I also think that it very much depends on your diving comfort level. If you go to some sheltered locations without much chop/surf and you stay close to your exit point, and you are comfortable with navigation skills, than you probably would be fine. Have fun out there!

Hello,

My wife and I were there last year we stayed just next to where your staying. We were at Maui Outriggers..anyhow I would recommend shore dives with Shaka Divers http://www.shakadivers.com/. Very reasonably priced and an awsome guide, think it was like 65 bucks or so for two tanks including gear. He has a wide variety of places to dive, night dives, ect...He is great at finding critters and lots of fun. Since your going to be staying for a bit if your not already AOW take that course with Maui Dreams its about 500 bucks, you get like six dives, two from the boat one site is Molokini for the Deep Dive and you get to pick a few specialties. We did the scooters so awsome, and again all gear was included (suit, tanks fins, scooter, camera) we also did the photography specialty. Anyhow this was the most band for our buck. Maui Divers well they may be good but just did not like there service to much like a travel agency...Well have fun and tell Shaka Doug "Harvey and Didi" from Maine sent you. Sorry for the long winded spiel lol

I will be in Maui from July 15 to the 26th. Will you be there at the same time? I know of a good dive close to where you are staying. I am looking for someone to dive with and find some new places. Let me know if you are interested.
