Print Email Add to blog A St. Petersburg resident maimed in a shark attack in Egypt last December has received 50 thousand dollars in compensation from that country’s Ministry of Tourism.
The man had his arm bitten off. He underwent surgery in Egypt and rehabilitation in St. Petersburg. He says that the compensation covers the cost of a prosthetic arm.

How would this be fair!? Its hardly their fault that a shark attacked this man! Has anyone seen this sort of compensation happen elsewhere?

I feel bad for the guy, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The article does not suggest his compensation is fair, it simply states that he says it covered the cost of his operation. How much would you suggest he’s supposed to get paid for losing his limb while snorkeling? The sharks are not gonna come up with that kind of money. Stuff happens, dude.

Probably some screwy law like here in the US where you can trip on a broken sidewalk and get compensation from the homeowner even though he didn’t install the sidewalk and doesn’t own it.

Or when someone breaks into your house, cuts his hand on the glass he broke while entering illegally, then sues you for liability and wins. Pretty crazy. Hasn’t happened to me, but it has happened a lot in the U.S. Not fair at all.

It may have simply been a gesture of good will, The do make alot of money off tourism there and even with Egypt having no real liability, they may have felt it was an honorable act of kindness since that divers life will be forever changed and his road to recovery will be a long one. In the early reporting of the story of the attack I seem to recall them suggesting the sharks were in the area due to a vessel sailing thru and dumping bloody sheep carcasses over board essentially chumming the water.

That’s why you should make sure they leave your home on a slab. "dead men tell no tales" Nor file any law suite.
