The Mighty OOn Saturday August 25, 2007 at 9:04am I got the first glimpse of the Mighty O. The Oriskney located 26 miles off the coast of Pensacola FL is an 888ft Aircraft Carrier sunk in 212ft of water. But fear not fellow recreational divers there is plenty too see around 60-130ft range. If the super structure was the only thing visible on this wreck that alone would have made the $150 and 1hr boat ride out to her worth it. I made two Nitrox dives the first dive was on a 28% giving me a MOD of 133ft and the second dive I used a 32% blend. The viz was absolutely fantastic! As soon as you started down the ascent line you could see her super structure reaching toward the surface. Descending downward I felt more like a Sky diver than a Scuba diver the water was so warm and clear. She has only been down for some 18 months but that has not discouraged the marine life that is starting to make her their home. In these two dives I saw sea turtles, barracudas, sharks and tons of fish. Sea urchins have started to make the deck their home as well. Without having to go down to the flight deck you can still get some penetration in the super structure staying around 80- 90 ft. It is very easy to lose track of time and depth so make sure you keep a close eye on your gauges. The weekend before I made my dive their was a fatality. (see my other dive report oriskany death for details) The only bad part of the dive was those damn jellies I wore a skin gloves and boots but no hood for my bald head. Next time I can’t wait to dive her again. If you are interested in booking a trip drop me a line I can hook you up with a great boat and captain.
