Confession: My idea of a perfect dive is one where I’m by myself and can take time to study my surroundings without having to stay with a guide or a group. In fact, I once did that in La Jolla Cove .. rented gear, went to the bottom at 30 feet and just sat there among the kelp and watched the world swim by. Now I realize that diving alone is rightly frowned upon for safety reasons, so the next best thing would be a dive buddy who has a similar contemplative approach to diving and is more interested in really seeing and absorbing (and possibly photographing) than in chasing a guide and being constantly distracted by buoyancy and equalization issues as one changes depth.

Now if only I lived closer to the coast!
