Help me sell my Pirate Booty?

Ok. Here’s the scoop. While diving on a ship wreck two days ago I found a paper bill of $50,000 metecal from Mozambique. What it was doing there is anyone’s guess. But selling this sucker is near impossible. I can send money to Mozambique no problem. But I can’t find any currency exchange companies in the US to buy it. The current exchange rate to US dollars is $1,855.00. I WILL PAY $500 COMMISSION to anyone who can help me sell it. Perhaps some divers in another country such as Germany or Belgium who more actively trade with Mozambique? Let me know. Otherwise I will frame my Pirate Booty and hang it on the wall of my office to dream about what could have been.......

You found it in a ship wreck! That’s pretty cool. Can you post a pic?

Well...a boat wreck. It had a fiberglass hull and was obliterated on the rocks. We found tons of wreckage including tools, pillows, cushions, antennae array, awning, Ryobie drill batteries, a full Barbecue, some gps computer, a working G-shock watch, and my $50,000 metacal bill. I didn’t have my camera for the wreck, but I will post pics of the bill. Still pretty cool to find.

Why not just deposit it at the bank and pay their exchange fee?!

Ok. Here’s the final word. In 2006 Mozambique changed over their currency, and they are offering 100 to 1 trade in value. So my $50,000 just turned into $500 which converts to $18.48 US. So basically I have a cool wall decoration with a cool story :-)

I must admit I had a lot of fun spending the money in my mind on all the coolest new dive equipment. I was all set to get my wife an underwater scooter and full face masks with transmitters. Now I have to earn it the old fashioned way!

Are you sure you want to get your wife a mask with transmitter, there goes the silent world! My daughter wanted one and she talks more than me, those who have met me may find that hard to believe!

From PastorG: I’ve got a call in to a friend who frequents Mozambique, will let you know of any leads I find....
So last night I had another inspiration. PastorG could you still ask your friend who frequents Mozambique for assistance? Only I’d like him to find out if he can use the money within the country to help some children in need. This money has brought to light just how poor a nation Mozambique is. The currency excahange companies have all painted different stories about how "de-valued" the old currency is, however, maybe someone on-site can determine if there might be enough value to at least make a small difference. I would feel much better about helping someone in need than looking at it on my wall. If he’s interested please let me know where I can mail it. My personal e-mail is richard4ster@gmail.com.

I’ve got a photo for the wall. And I was told that the 100 to 1 trade-in value was only a "out of country restriction." Thus there is a possibility that the bill might still be worth its full value to someone inside the country through the end of 2012. If that’s the case I’d rather make an effort to help someone in need. To me that would be a much better end to the story :-)
