Cold Water Diving

I just ordered my drysuit and am really looking forwarded to using it...BUT how do you keep the facial skin...lips, etc that remain exposed from freezing? The one time I was in terribly cold water, within seconds my lips felt like they were going to fall off and my cheeks were hurting...ouch....BRRRRR do they make a full face/lip shield????

With a full face mask you need to carry a back-up regular mask in case you need to buddy breath off someone else’s gear.

I have seen 3 mil mask that need to be trimed to go around your diving mask, LP used to have them but I can imagine all kinds of trouble if you need to clear your mask while wearing gloves. Something like trying to put stockings on a woman while wearing gloves and blindfolded :)

Cool for you.....no wait "dry" for you. I love dry suit diving. Anything below 75f and I am going dry. Kinda hate to see it warm up. I have discovered that my face gets colder when the hood is not thick enough or properly fit for my face. I went through a number of hoods before finding one that really contours right for me. You are going to have skin exposure unless you go full mask or hardhat. I finally ended up with a 5mm DUI. Yes the lips still get numb but the cheeks are much happier.

How cold is the water?

When I have to dive contaminated water, the dry suit I wear has a hood thats attached to my suit. The hood fits over my face and when I put on my full face mask, the seal on the mask seals to the hood not on my face. Wearing gloves, no part of my body or my lips (LOL) is ever exposed to the contaminated water.

Your lips and cheeks won’t freeze. After a few seconds you won’t feel anything. Then enjoy your dive. Very few of us up north use full face mask even when the water is below 40 degrees as it is most of the time anyways. You’ll get use to it and have fun. The hood is over your chin and overtop of the mask skirt. Very little skin should be exposed. Enjoy your drysuit.

The water in SA isn’t to cold, we can dive almost all year around.
But the lips are an issue...lol.

I’ve heard of divers putting Vaseline on their lips. It’s a petroleum jelly. Personally I haven’t tried it, cause after the first few minutes my face goes numb, and I don’t feel it anymore. Just don’t get it on your suite.

There are many models of full face masks out there and in general all are good. I have used the AGA Divator a fair bit in commercial diving and own one. Great mask and as one other who dived in contaminated water you can get it with positive pressure inside to prevent ingress of contaminated water. I dont believe you will be doing any of that nasty diving.

For me I have dived in water below zero Celsius and with a straight forward DV/Regulator. The pain of the cold goes away quick. If you are worried still and want to get a full face, then beware they are costly. A good hood is a must and more often than not a trick is to wear hood inside out and the full face seals better against the hood then. If the hood is a good fit then there is no problem fitting the hood over the mask seal as when your body heats the film of water inside the hood you will remain warm. Hope this little info helps

There is not too much to learn with the FFM. The Divator for example had a rubber nose block in it to block your nose to help with equalization. There are different kinds, but for contaminated water you need a positive pressure FFM. Some have a valve to open to allow breathing outside air on surface also. And for the most, communications can be fitter to have diver to diver or diver to surface or both.

I have the All the Interspiro full face masks (with the communication device) by ocean technology. my buddy and I can talk to each other, no jaw ache because no regulator in your mouth. Great for when your exploring and going after lobster.I’ve have it for 5 years and wound not dive without it.

I dive year round , below 55F i dive dry , Below 45 I dive dry in a crushed neo drysuit, i wear a henderson goldcore drysuit hood, and on my reg (aqualung glacia) there is a lip shield, i think i comes included with and aqualung cold water reg, however i have seen them online for about 15 $ . I ordered 4 more this winter for stocking stuffers for my cold water dive buddies. They love them , and i cannot say enough, they do make a tremendous diffference in keeping your lips from falling off...lol. the only exposed portion of my body is two small parts of my cheek about the size of a quarter. After about 60 seconds of exposure the tingling of the frigid water on my cheeks goes away, but i do agree , i cannot stand cold lips. I ordered mine from an aqualung dealer, i would assume like my local dive shop any aqualung dealer should be able to get them for you . I have seen them fit on many other brands of regulators as well, despite being an aqualung product. or you could buy them online, do a google search for lip shields. I also dive full face masks, but truly prefer the air consumption of my reg, and am not really bothered by exiting the water with rosy cheeks!

In the winter and spring I use my full face mask. It is great and keeps my face from being numb.

I completed my Dive Master course in April and my IDC/IE this June, I spent a lot of time diving at Dutch Springs PA training facility. The water temperature at depth was often in the lower 40’s and at surface a relatively balmy upper 50’s. I dive wet. ok, 7mm fullsuit with 5 mm core warmer and 5 mm hooded vest, plus wool socks under my booties. It is cold, and so you dont want to spend a lot of time at depth under 60’. I also realize that as an instructor, most of my students will be in wet suits, so I think that I should be as well. Exposed areas of the face go numb fairly quickly, but wont freeze. Just a question of whether your wetsuit is snug enough to limit the circulation of water around your torso. I just do it.
