The DIR concept starts before you enter the water. While much is written about the DIR gear (Halcyon shills??), being DIR is more about preparedness, buddy awareness, being fit to dive, team skills, and teamwork. Breathing a 7` hose and diving a BP/wing doesn`t make one DIR. I took the DIR Fundamentals class in 2003 and it certainly made me a better diver and a much better dive buddy. Arrogant?? Perhaps. But when I see someone post on a public forum they were solo spearfishing at 230` on air, I`m going ask them if they have death wish. Is that arrogance or the enlightenment that I know it`s wrong?
