Anyone have any thoughts on the Doing It Right dive philosophy. The three versions I commonly read are 1. It`s the only way to dive (guess who says that) 2. They`re arrogant know it all shills for Halcyon and 3. They`re arrogant know it alls who actually are pretty good and you can learn from them. Has anyone here dived with or trained with this philosophy?

Just read through this web site http://www.gue.com/index.html. Pretty interesting stuff. I`d like to think that I can always learn something from somebody, either positive or negative. Yet, it does seem that these folks have built an entire niche out of militant safety standards. I suppose that such an endeavor could create a certain arrogance of spirit over time. Could be interesting albeit annoying...LOL!

Here`s a cool site that explains the system a bit: http://www.dirquest.com/about_dir.shtml

So if I have a long second stage, and a back inflated bc, I`m almost a DIR diver. It`s cool how they are suggesting ways to keep divers safer. The best way to remain safe is to practice, practice, practice. Get comfortable with the gear that you have. And make sure it`s all in working order with regular maintenance on your regs.

The DIR concept starts before you enter the water. While much is written about the DIR gear (Halcyon shills??), being DIR is more about preparedness, buddy awareness, being fit to dive, team skills, and teamwork. Breathing a 7` hose and diving a BP/wing doesn`t make one DIR. I took the DIR Fundamentals class in 2003 and it certainly made me a better diver and a much better dive buddy. Arrogant?? Perhaps. But when I see someone post on a public forum they were solo spearfishing at 230` on air, I`m going ask them if they have death wish. Is that arrogance or the enlightenment that I know it`s wrong?

Agreed, but I don`t need to be DIR certified to be so enlightened. Can one achieve such safety preparedness without DIR...YES. However, the DIR folk don`t seem to believe so. Therein lies the arrogance. As stated previously, I do believe that DIR has something to offer...IMHO

I dive a halcyon BCD and love it. It is the most comfortable BCD I`ve worn. I like a lot of the DIR principles, but I don`t always agree 100% with everything they teach. People will argue which is better PADI or NAUI or GUE or SSI/TDI. You can learn from everyone of them. If you don`t apply what you have learned they what good was the training? I`ve read their book on the Fundamentals and I learned things that PADI didn`t teach me. Take it for what it`s worth. You can learn something from everyone.
