You can already do item # 2. Visit your events section (where you can edit your own events) and you’ll see an envelope icon on the left, next to the event. When you click that envelope it will start a message to all people that have rsvp’d OR posted a comment on the event. The same functionality is available on forum topics. You can send a message to all members that replied to a forum topic. And also on blogs (send a message to all members that posted a comment to a blog article).

Regarding item # 1. I didn’t want to do that because of item # 2 :) I figured if someone is interested, but not yet committed, they can select "Maybe" to be informed of any updates in the future that may help persuade them to a "Yes".
