you would need 7 mm with hood and gloves to be comfortable in california waters.

I live about an hour south of sacramento, but I wouldnt mind driving a bit. I second the suggestion of a thick wetsuit. My buddy and I wear a full bodysuit with 5 ml gloves and boots, 7ml arms and legs, 5ml chest with a 7ml vest and hood. Its phenomenal when you get below the thermocline.
If you dont mind a bit of cold, I see people dive in nothing but a full body 5ml, no hood.

I live in Las Vegas, so I would drive over to southern California. When is the water the warmest?

Thanks for the information. Yikes! All my dives have been in a skin, a swimsuit, or a shorty.

From Normie: I live in Las Vegas, so I would drive over to southern California. When is the water the warmest?
Right now the water is really warm, i have seen people diving without their hoods and also some without their wetsuits. Its in high 60’s at surface but at depth it can get chilly.
