Experienced Dive Buddy Wanted Texas

Hello, I recently came here to Texas to go to grad school, and I’d like to go diving over the summer somewhere around Texas to keep my skills up to date. I’m an MSDT instructor and divemaster, but I don’t have any experience in fresh water, so I think it would be fun to try a lagoon or whatnot this summer. I’d prefer a non-novice buddy, someone at least AOW level or higher, or with lots of dives under their belt.

I’m working on DiveMaster this summer - already Rescue Diver certified with about 40 dives - all open water. I have dived at a couple of scuba parks that you may find interesting. My favorite is Clear Springs Scuba Park just outside of Terrell. I have also dived in Lake Travis a number of times, Aquarena Springs in San Marcos, and Athens Scuba Park in Athens. I almost went on a dive in Blue Lagoon which I understand is near Huntsville but had a conflict. I’d like to try it out sometime. Aquarena Springs is limited to people taking their scientific diving class or instructors who have gone through their course and have students. You might check on taking their course. The Athens Scuba park has lots of sunken objects (boats, planes, bus, etc) and is fairly clear but has a clay bottom with no life (fish or plants).

I’m busy in June except for the week of June 16-22. As a high school science teacher, my summer is open. I’m heading to Cozumel with singledivers.com on their June 23rd trip. Check it out if you are interested. In July, I am uncertain the impact my DiveMaster training will have on my availability.

Since I’m located in Austin, I like going on the Lake Travis cleanup in September. There are other cleanup activities which your local dive shop should be able to help you with. There is also a www.divearoundtexas.com site you will want to check out. They make it a competition. Dive a minimum of 12 times in at least four different dive locations to qualify for giveaways. It was a lot of fun to participate in this last year.

Thanks for all that info! I’ll check out some of those websites. I don’t have a lot of cash, since I’m in grad school and currently owe all my money and most of my soul to student loans/the government. If I did, you can bet I’d be on a plane in a heartbeat, back to Honduras where I used to work as a dive instructor. Love it there. So long/expensive trips are outI was just thinking of staying local, tooling around in a lake or lagoon as a means to stay up to date with my skills, without going broke. I heard from some people who are going to blue lagoon on June 17, if you’d like to check it out with me, I could use a buddy. Drop me a line at wanderwoman25@hotmail.com.
