It is not a real risk. But the answer is YES you can get sick from some bacteria, alleges and parasites that are in the water. Most of the things that you are thinking of after watching that show died as soon as you got out of the water. The rest died as soon as you rinsed of with fresh water. If you used soap that did them them for sure.

Thus my reasoning for a freshwater and vinegar mix in a squirt bottle for post-dive treatments.

Be careful of what you touch and wear your gloves for protection, Why else did you buy them? Yea, Shark week will do that 2ya :)

The dreaded Sea Lice, little critters(actually Jelly Fish Larvae I think). They make you itch till raw. We use a product applied like sunscreen at wet suit openings as this is where they seem to get you. Then after diving a little mist with my famous oil and vinager, a few croutans and we have a salad. When all done a fresh water shower on the boat with soap, dive buddies are encouraged to help each other with this part.

the parasites are specialized to live in the gills and in between the scales of aquatic animals if any did get on you they wouldn`t be able to survive
