Key West is a nice town to visit but I think the diving is better in the upper Key’s.
Another option is to board the Spree at Stock Island which is just north of KW and go out to the Dry Tortugas. The diving is better than Florida but not as good as the Carribean and the liveaboard will cost you less overall than staying in KW which you can still visit before and after the trip.

It’s not quite a resort but Captain’s Corner in Key West has a bunkhouse that is dirt cheap for diver’s and they have a good charter that is within walking distance. If you dive with them the owner Leslie will give you a great deal on accommodations.

Subtropics is a great dive shop and will take you to dive spots that are deeper than 25 feet. Diver City (I think thats the name of the shop) on Duval Street is also owned by a friend of mine, Mike and Carla, he is BottomCrawler on spearboard. Tell them Cindy sent you.
If you are driving down and want to stop in Tavernier, you are more than welcome to dive with me.

Unless you are really set on KW, INHO you are better off middle to upper keys. Lots of great diving in Key Largo. Shops there also have some great dive adn lodging packages as well. Check out Silent World and Amy Slater.

Just returned from Key West about 3 weeks ago. You can see my photos and video here to get what to expect:

The Vandenberg is pretty cool. I enjoy it better than Key Largo mainly because there are more stuff to do outside of water. I think Key Largo has more deep/wreck dive.
I used LostReefAdventure (http://www.lostreefadventures.com/) as our dive shop. The dive shop is right by the dock, so it’s convenient and the crew are helpful (although the owner seems to be not that out going). They have 20% off if you do more than 3 trips with them.
