We head out to the main barrier islands – Karakana and Lumalihe, and often stop inside where, to our great surprise, we are finding world class dive sites off the island of Mbaleva.
Mati Pangera brings to mind a sunken island, with hills, ridges and valleys. Its “trees” are massive fan corals, its grasses waving beds of Spotted and Spaghetti Garden Eels. Its boulders are massive barrel sponges, its berry patches cabbage corals. Its valleys are home to countless numbers of jacks, barracuda, snappers and fusiliers. Ocean Triggerfish nest in the valleys, butterflies, angels and anthias dart in among the sponges and fans. Gray reef sharks usually patrol their personal restaurant, waiting for the right time to order a meal.
