El Cid, La Ceiba Reef (DC3 Airplane Wreck) is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located in Mexico. This dive site has an average rating of 2.50 out of 5 from 2 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 36-40ft/11-12m. The average visibility is 91-100ft/28-30m. This dive site provides bathrooms and airfills.

This old DC3 40- passenger Convair airliner was sunk deliberately in 1977 as a prop for Mexican disaster movie, The hull was substantially intact until hurricane Roxanne passed by in October 1995; she is now well broken up and scattered over the sea bed, resting about 210ft/ 65m from the pier. The remains of the aircraft are now home to a large assortment of grunts and snapper. On the shore side of the wreck the sea bed rises rapidly to 17ft/ 5m And the numerous small coral heads have large numbers of Christmas tree worms and the split-crown featherduster on them. Hermit crabs, numerous shrimps and several species of blenny all compete for space among the sea fans and plumes which are common feature of all Caribbean reefs.

I’ll need to check that out too, BTW the "D" in DC-3 stands for Douglas, Convair did make twin engine aircraft also and it wouldn’t be the first time they got mixed up, easiest way to tell, the Convairs had a nose wheel, the DC-3’s were all tail dragers.

there’s not much left of the plane. the hurricanes and salt water have really made a mess of it. but, it was cool for a newbie like me.
