It’s an okay spot for lake Travis. Visibility varies greatly, anywhere between 3ft to 30ft. You’ll occasionally find items like sunglasses, but it’s not my favorite sunglasses-hunting spot because it’s cleaned out so frequently by the dive-charter boat. It’s a simple dive in terms of complexity. It’s hard to get lost ... uphill is towards the island. You might want a compass so you know what side of the island you’re on.

Canyon lake is less then an hour from south Austin plenty of free dive spots. Visibility same as Lake Travis, Marinas and boat ramps are free diving spots I go too.

Last Deep Diver Training dive. We included bottom scanning, found another pair of sunglasses. We also found a mooring line a fellow boat operator ask Robert to locate. We had to cut it free of large rock to recover it.

Second Deep Diver Training dive. Viz was still around 5 feet. Explored more grotto’s and found a pair of sunglasses. Water temp was perfect for swim shorts and rash guard for exposure protection.

Starnes Island is where party boats visit so often find items they lose. My buddy found sunglasses. Until the lake fills back up (down about 30 ft), visibility in Lake Travis is down to a max of 5 feet so it isn’t as pleasant right now. When I certified last year, vis was about 10-15 feet. Two buddies doing tech diving said vis under 100 ft was about zero. They speculated it was because sediment in water is concentrated and shorelines are down in the silt instead of at rock levels.

I took a group boat called the "Giant Stride" out to Starnes. They charge $45 for a half day.
