Canyon Lake - New Braunfels TX

Loading...

Canyon Lake is located just forty miles north of San Antonio and twenty-five miles west of New Braunfels and San Marcos.

Canyon Lake is an all around nice dive. The visibility is decent and there are quite a few things to see underwater. There are many common freshwater fish and plants. And there is wrecked cars and boats at about 40 to 60 feet and a forest at 60 to 80 feet. There are three places that provide the most common water access; North Park, Comal Park, and Overlook Park. The best diving is at Overlook Park.

Cayon Lake is great for recreational diving, there is a even a town that was covered by water when the lake was filled. I have heard some complaints about the murkiness, but this year the water was much clearer due to lack of inflow from the drought.

Bottom Type: Limestone, Silt, Gravel
Water Temp: 80°F Summer, 48°F Winter
Depth: 20-80 ft.
Visibility: 8-25 ft.

I went scuba diving here on 7/22/2017. Average viz: 5-10ft/2-3m. Water temp: 76-80°F/24-27°C.
I found tons of cool stuff along the clifs and edges at around 30-40 feet. Everything below was old.

Comal park. Swimming area, to the left as you are walking down toward the water. There is an area marked, "steep slope", and "sudden drop off." Vis is around 8’ in the 10-25’ depth range. After 40’ Vis extends greatly, albeit a light is definitely needed as it is pitch black at that depth.

I did one dive at Overlook Park and one at North Point park last month. Viz was about 25ft. I saw a huge catfish swimming on the bottom.
