After two decades in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Indra was recommissioned in December 1967. She arrived in the Republic of Vietnam in May 1968 to serve as a tender and floating base for the Mobile Riverine Force. Following her return to the United States, she decommissioned in May 1970 and rejoined the Reserve Fleet. Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1989, USS Indra was disposed of by transfer to the State of North Carolina in January 1992.

This is one of those dives that can be a pleasant surprise for the off-shore NC deep diver — one can actually take a leisurely stroll around the wreck without having to worry about decompression time or checking your pressure gauge every couple of minutes! Just don’t come here too often— and don’t come here expecting offshore conditions. It is pretty rare for the viz or temp to approach Gulf Stream conditions, but it can happen! The wreck is so close to the surface though that any bright sun will make the viz appear better than it would be on deeper wreck. The Indra hull is completely intact so navigation is easy.

GreggS - 10/11/2021 12:45 PM I went scuba diving here on 10/8/2021. Average viz: 51-60ft/16-18m. Water temp: 76-80°F/24-27°C. Chartered with Discovery Diving, Beaufort, NC. We had much better conditions than the first time we dove the Indra. Visibility was 50-75’ with only minimal surge or current. Some parts of the ship had collapsed since the other time we dove it 5 years ago so it was like a completely different wreck. There was a wide and abundant assortment of sea life including barracuda, amberjack, spadefish, sea cucumbers, starfish, and huge balls of baitfish. Some people reported seeing flounder and even a bull shark but we missed those. Very enjoyable dive. The crew also ran a line from the ship to a nearby barge that we went to on the 2nd dive.

taylorharris50 - 7/31/2019 1:10 PM 3rd and 4th dives on the Indra this month after a 5 year gap. She has been ripped apart by recent hurricanes. Better to be diving than not but 5-10’ viz, rough seas, and a battered wreck made for an unimpressive day.

Very low visibility with a side to side surge and slight current from bow of the wreck to the stern. Lots of sea life. Water temps around 80 degrees. yardpro - 11/08/2016 11:57 AM Dove the Indra sunday 11/6/16 and what a difference after the hurricane... the Bow and stern are the only things intact, the sides have collapsed, the starboard hull side had fallen over the steel sailboat that was lying against it. TOTALLY different wreck, very cool now... I was "over" the indra as i dive it so much but now i an interested as it is a totally different wreck now.. Vis was an awesome 40’ for there.
