We ran out to Mammoth Lake today to blow some bubbles. The dive shop was really nice and they had a decent product line and variety. Also, the guys who run the shop were very friendly and helpful. They put my regulator back together for me and didn’t even charge me. Then we chatted about spearfishing and guns and the classes they have available. Great people!

The lake looked pretty good from the surface. They put a lot of work into the diving platforms and sunk a whole lot of cool stuff for you to find. However, viz was not more than 2 to 3’ so it was hard to stay with your buddy and find the next wreck which I found to be pretty annoying (I’m so spoiled now, having had 100’ viz on trips ...).

After a while we gave up on trying to see each other below water and decided to practice our navigation skills. That worked out really well! Buoyancy on the other hand was a little harder to practice given that the landscape was very uneven and changed too often.

It was such a hot day and the water was really hot too, around 86 or so. I don’t think I’ve ever dove in such warm waters. That was kind of strange. There were some little fish to see such as pin fish and bass.

All in all, it was an okay dive day. I guess once they have the lake mapped out with the wrecks and coordinates this would be an awesome place to practice your navigation skills.

I’m not sure I would go there all that often because of the distance (it took us an hour and a half from NW Houston) but I’m glad I made it at least this once if for nothing else to support the nice people who run it and are trying to provide us locals with a place to go.

Cudos to the team! :)
