Anyone heard about Mammoth Lake closing? I heard today that it has been closed since December 1st. Any news? I am sorry to hear of its closing (if true) - it was a fun place to dive. I was planning on doing a drysuit there this month.

They invested a lot of money into that dive site, it would be shame to see it close. I know they had problems improving the water visibility and the taxes on that land must be expensive.

Not sure if they’re actually closing though, haven’t heard.

I just tried calling them to see and the phone just rang. I sent an email and I’ll update when I hear back. The website www.divethemammoth.com doesn’t have information on a closing.. Pictures look great. hmm.. not sure.

I got an email from Hydrosports Scuba and they said they are no longer affiliated with Mammoth Lake and they "have no clue" if it’s open for divers or not, but they assume it is.

Greg -

I hope they have not shut down. That would be a shame. I agree that vis was a problem but it sure was fun to check out all the sunk stuff even if it was mostly by feel.

I spoke with HydroSports and apparently there is some bad blood between them and Mammoth, even to the point of going to court. There was a large amount of money spent on the creation of Mammoth. I hope they can resolve their issues and refocus on the important stuff.......diving

Yes, I know that there has been a hugh amount of money sunk into the lake - not only in diving items of interest but filtration equipment as well. The filtration has never lived up to as advertised but so be it. It really is no different than Lake Travis or any other Texas Inland Waterway dive. I really detest the saying but....."It is what it is". As we are so limited in the Houston area for local diving - I think the loss of even one site is a real shame. Hope the parties involved can see through it! Its about diving - sometimes that vis is great - sometimes its not.
