Blue Springs has a cavern where you fight a light spring current to descend. It goes deep, but unless you and your buddy are cavern certified, you can’t bring a light because of the whole dying thing. I went to 66’ before it was too dark to see. Otherwise, theres a fun shallow drift dive when you’re done with the cavern. It’s a fun dive but the long walk from the parking lot on sometimes slippery wooden walkway in full gear can be a chore on a hot day. Also, even on weekdays, the locals show up to tube, swim, free dive, and snorkel the springs. It can get crowded. The water is mostly clear, but on a weekend packed with people, it can get churned up. Saw quite a few fish despite the crowds.

I went scuba diving here on 9/7/2018. Average viz: 41-50ft/12-15m. Water temp: 71-75°F/22-24°C.
Visibility was great...but we were under weighted for the dive in the boil of the spring. Definitely recommend over weighting yourself for the boil dive. We ended up just diving the spring run to the end of the swimming area. We will return on another date for the full dive.

Managed to get 1 cavern dive in before park rangers chased us out of the water as there was a little 2 1/2ft gator relaxing under the boardwalk. Also saw a 1 week old baby manatee and the huge Mom resting near the spring head.

Getting up stream can be interesting but the spring is awesome.

I went scuba diving here on 10/27/2013. Average viz: 51-60ft/16-18m. Water temp: 71-75°F/22-24°C.
Steps at bottom very slippery with algal growth. Slipped on the second submerged step and did a decidedly un-graceful entry. Somehow landed in the water clear of the hard surfaces. Be careful.
Nice swim upriver. Drift down to second entry to exit. An adolescent manatee insisted on snuggling up into our chests as we snorkled to the spring vent. Steady SCUBA traffic. Vis suffered from divers scraping fins against the rock, dislodging algae and scum. Some crowding at the mouth where divers stacked up, waiting to go down into the vent. Several times, there was no dive route for a freedive with everyone milling aboutno need to crowd the vent like that. My buddy shot sideways to avoid being kicked on ascent and cracked his face pretty good on a rock ledge.
Cavern mouth around 20ft can be very intimidating. Large fallen trees block the entrance; you have to thread your way between them
ALL IN ALL, GREAT DIVE TODAY.

GoodDive to all!

Fantastic, Great, unbelievable!!! Many manatees and their calves were there among us. Playful, entertaining, and beautiful to watch and photograph. What a remarkable dive day! The spring is simply gorgeous too. The formations are extraordinary. I got a ton of photos and a video posted on at http://www.flickr.com/santafesandy/sets
