I’m heading to Panama in February and staying at the Octopus Garden Hotel in Portobelo. Anyone been there? Looks pretty basic, but the posted rates are about $50 per night, $50 for the boat (gear included). So far, communication with the owners has been very positive and accommodating.

After that, I hope to go back to Old Providence Island for a week, which I’ll post separately.

I have stayed on that side of Panama in Bocas Del Toro which is a couple hundered miles to the north. The diving was great in the archipelago but if you really want superb conditions you will want to head off shore a couple miles. I dove with a shop who had well above average customer service but sub par equipment. At the very least I would bring your own computer and reg set.

good luck and safe diving!!

I’d love to see a diver report from you when you return. I thought about planning a dive trip to Panama for Apri; but changed my mind and book for a trip[ to my old standby, Cozumel. I didn’t book because I was reading mixed reviews and with limit dive vacation time I didn’t want to have a disappointing trip. Ed

The trip I spoke of was from 2010. All diving was all within an archipelago in 20-60ft of water and a constant 85-95 deg. F. Clarity was 40-60 ft depending on tide and location. Tons to see just like many other spots that far south. I would say that your location would provide the same or even better. In Bocas, all islands drain into the sea water and cycle out with the tides. In my opinion they are ruining the clarity in the area and need a contained sewage system for the islands and coastal towns but the $$ is not there. It is still far better than average but I bet 20 years will have a dramatic negative impact as tourism grows and faster than they can upgrade water protection systems and regulations.

Hope you have a good trip!

Check out Bocas Del Toro. You would not be disappointed with the food, diving, night life, local culture, etc. Well I guess that depends on what you are looking for but we had had a wonderful time and will be returning soon. If your looking for the resort type of vacation head to Cozumel. If you want a lot of local culture, good diving, not resort feel, and a place you will be and feel safe, head to Bocas. If you’re interested I have a friend with a house there that is for rent.

Well, I should have taken your advice and gone to Bocas. Before anyone makes any plans or reservations at the Octopus Garden Hotel, you gotta contact me first.
