Local divers rescued after 17 hours in Gulf

FORT MYERS -
Two local divers can count their blessings after being stranded for 17 hours in the Gulf. They were found 14 miles off shore from the Florida Keys. The pair was drift diving from their boat.
Bill Oswald has many memories fishing on his boat ‘Reel Livin.’ But last Saturday’s fishing trip with his friend Greg Collier was one the men will never forget.

Let’s hope they go out and buy some stuff to make them more visable before the next dive!

Wow! I never dive off shore without a SMB or other safety/rescue equipment. A $40.00 investment would have saved a lot of pain and USCG money. Very glad they were found.

Also check SMB’s for leaks, we surfaced off WPB only to find my daughter had poked a hole in hers doing a Shamu exit, some of the older boats there used that style platform. The boat was following the bouy which had broken free of the reel and was no where in sight. Her SMB wouldn’t stay up so I deployed mine and the boat quickly spotted us among 4’ swells.

I now keep mine inside a pocket to protect it along with a strobe, mirror and glow stick!
