I visited Riviera Maya and stayed at the all inclusive Palladium resort. This just 10 minutes north of Akumal. Although I did not journey to Akumal this trip, the Palladium site gave rave reviews for snorkeling there. I dove with www.scubacaribe.com and some of the folks that I dove with took a trip with them to Cozumel. FYI - I was in Cozumel last year and every dive was fantastic.
I was dissapointed with the reef area that we dove off the Palladium. One fairly deep dive and one shallower (with swim through :) ). Seemed like the big hurricane of a few years ago beat the place up a bit. On my dives there didn’t seem to be too much life around. I did see a mid-size turtle on the shallower dive and a stingray while snorkeling in about 3’ of water off the resort beach.
