My hair is extremely thick and has been really long. One thing you might try is a swimmer cap. Search Speedo Swim Cap or just Swim Cap online. They come in sylicon, latex, and lycra. They fit snugly to your head and keep your hair dry too. Pro swimmers wear these. A photo of some is listed below.
