First time I’ve ever heard of doing the navigation in a parking lot, mine was in a dark flooded quarry, my daughter did hers in WPB and had to account for drift because of the current always there.
Being a grunt you should have no problem reading a compass! Just like land you take a heading, pick a landmark and go to it and repeat. The only difference in water is can you see a landmark at 5 50’? And in water you may not be on the bottom so there will be no landmarks then throw in a current and it’s more like wind drift when flying.
My problem is I need to watch the compass because I tend to turn right. I tell newbies it’s because both of my fins are lefts while pointing to the big L on both of them :)
Have fun and hope to see you on a dive sometime.
