You are thinking too much. All of the agencies are teaching down to the lowest denominator and therefore - follow your dive computer is safer/better...
I am not agreeing with this - I am only pointing it out that Diving is safe and what could possibly go wrong is the new mantra. Back in 1978 when I was certified - things were very different and so was the equipment.
