My best suggestion is to take a Rescue Diver or Stress & Rescue course if you want to learn about managing problems for another diver underwater. If you have any concerns about this topic: The training you’ll receive should clear things up.
The take away from this discussion shouldn’t be whether or not diving with a buddy will cramp your style, but that most dive accidents are preventable and some simple mistakes (often involving gear mishaps) that could be fatal or escalate to real problems for the lone diver are more manageable with the assistance of another well-trained diver who’s nearby, ready, able, and willing to assist. Very rarely do I hear of a dive accident where a buddy actually hurt another diver by assisting or requiring basic in-water assistance. With or without in-water buddies: Dive safely, my friends. :)
