I too was in a truck accident. On Nov 29, 2009, I was rear-ended by a tractor trailer on my way home from work. I broke my lower back in two places, had whiplash, dozens of cuts and bruises, and I suffered two herniated discs in my neck (that I still have). I wore a back brace for 4 months and walked with a walker for 2 months. The biggest thing I cannot do is exercise like I would like to do. To date I still cannot run. But, diving is my favorite thing to do and I wanted to see my 12 year old son gets his certification. So, on June 5th and 6th, just 6 months after I couldn’t walk unassisted, I went on a dive trip and dove with him and his instructor. The hardest part was taking a couple of steps to get to the back of the boat and getting into the water. Getting out of the water was easier because I took off my BC and got back in the boat without all of that weight. It was hard to dive even doing a drift dive and not having to swim back to the boat. I was exhausted afterwards but happy. The dive was still challenging; but, I made sure I was going to be prepared to go on the trip. I went to the dive shop and dove in the pool for 3 straight weekends prior to the trip. So, my advice is....make sure you’re ready to get into the water. Make sure you can do it and that you are healed enough to dive. Be safe and don’t push yourself. I knew my limits and I knew what I was in for prior to my dive.
