Just finishing up 7 days of diving in Mahahual with my daughter. Diving was great. we dove with Dream Time Diving, very friendly, capable, and "full service" (They will load the gear, tanks, setup etc though I prefer to do my own) I brought my own gear, and my daughter rented hers at a nominal charge. Also made the trip to Chinchorro Banks, not to be missed, although the weather may not cooperate, the sea voyage can get choppy. We saw dolphins, nurse sharks, turtles and on the small caye where we stopped, giant iguanas and crocodiles. The local reef has lots of fine coral and sealife, turtles, eels, lobster etc. and unfortunately lionfish, although they are planning a lionfish hunting contest, with the local restaurants preparing the fish, in the next few weeks. We stayed at Posada de los 40 Canones, very pleasant on the beach. You do need a car to get here, but there are a number of fine Mayan ruins to drive to as well. Very laid back quiet village. Water was 84/86 all week, most divers are in shorties or rashie and boardshorts, still I prefer a 3mm full just for the exposure protection on a few swim-thrus and narrow passages. calm most days although occasional showers and winds may cancel a dive. Very good viz, 75’ - 100’ Did not really need the strobes on my Sealife camera.
