I did it on the Spree years ago but they have moved to Key West, their sistership the Fling is still going out of Freeport Texas. The Fling is a converted work boat with bunkbeds, not luxury but great diving, we did 4 or 5 dives a day :)
The Flower Gardens are very different from say Florida, the reef structure is different because you’re not near shore, the fish are confused, you’ll see many adults with juvinile colors. Besides reefs there are oil rigs which have become reefs, little fish around the legs and the bigger stuff just outside waiting for them to wander out. The trip will be much more diverse than a Carib island!

The Fling is still running trips to the Flower Gardens. I love diving out there. They are generally deep dives, and you can get some pretty swift currents, making it a bit of a challenge to get back on the boat for some. They are not guided dives, so you and your buddy are expected to be able to navigate yourself back to the boat. It’s all there, Sharks, Rays, etc... I was out there 2 years ago, and it seemed like there was more life out there than I remember. There was a couple of years where there were no boats going out, after the oil spill.
When are you thinking about going? I may be tempted to join you!

I am always game for a trip to the Flower Gardens. Just let me know when you’re ready to go! They are usually 2 day trips, but they do have 3 day trips. I believe The Fling is the only charter going out there. http://flingcharters.com/ The 2 day trips this year are running about $570, I think. That’s 7 dives if you do them all. Prices might vary depending on what dive shop you book through, not sure.
