The last time I dove Ship Rock, there were two huge schools of mackerel. Each school must have had 20,000 - 40,000 individual fish. I slowly kicked into the schools and hung there in the middle. Magical! Later I watched a sea lion trying to catch some of them. The speed of the sea lion and the mackerel was unbelievable! There were also many sea jellies, some of them with bells as large as two feet in diameter.

what or where is ship rock?

There are two cool looking white rock just off shore. The big flat one is Bird Rock. The small pointy one is Ship Rock. There is often a bit more current there, but that often brings the bigger fish, and you can always hide from the current on the back side. The last time we were there it was like a fish aquarium. And you can go as deep as you like. There are shelfs in the 30-50’ range, and walls going all the way down past 100’. Lots of choices. This is one of Katie’s favorite sites. Too bad she can’t go now :-(

Would like to do this trip, Saturday, March 10th ship rock/Catalina, aboard the Great Escape. I also have two other divers who would like to come along.

Love ship rock, think it is the best diving in Catalina, plus an added bonus of using the Great Escape, it doesn’t get any better than that.

Hi Dennis. Right now I am full, with a short backup list. If you are willing to hang in there until about 1 week out I can almost guarantee I will have a few people drop out. The Great Escaps is the one boat I enjoy sleeping on. Huge bunks. And I reserve the private staterooms for the couples. Big rooms with a door you can close to keep the snoring and bad gas out of your face ;-)

I typically fill up the roster in 24 hours and then build a standby list. That list is sitting at 8 people right now. I typically have 6-12 people to drop out in the last two weeks due to work conflict and health issues. So if you can hang on until the last minute I will e-mail down the list.
