Hey Divers, The weather looks great and you know you would much rather be in the cool water then inthe valleys where it’s over 100F. Last weekend we had 5 divers show up to get wet, including a little guy and his dad. Gabe had not seen Shelley, so we decided, like the rest of SoCal, to go visit Shaws Cove. After finding parking on the back half of the loop we made out way to the beach to check on conditions. When Russ counted no less than 45 divers floating on the surface we were wondering if there would be any vis to be found. We all decided to make a go for it and headed up to get geared up. Gabe was gung-ho to get in, but after the the long hike and climb down the stairs was just a bit tired, so he and his dad, Scott, snorkelled around while the rest of us went for a dive. Because of the number of floats and divers in the water we opted for a reverse loop. We went straight out from the stairs over the sand until we hit 40ft deep, then turned west and headed to the reef. Vis over the sand was a decent 10ft, but once we hit the reef we were really happy and surprised to find up to 20ft of vis on top of the reef. So we made out way back in zigging and zagging over the reef structure where we were able to stay away from the groups some. With all the divers in the water we had a couple of seperations, but the team worked together nicely to recover and continue with the dive. We all had a great time diving with only a couple of lows for the day. I know Gabe really wanted to go dive with us and I’m sure he will soon. The other low was from me. When I went to retrieve my camera from my goody pouch on my waist I found the bag was open. the camera was still inside because it floats and stayed at the top of the bag, but what didn’t float that I ended up losing was an Oceanic Sport puck style computer and a Sensus Ultra data-tracker, that I had forgotten to lash onto my inflator hose like usual. We went back and looked around some, but no luck. Now we look ahead to diving this weekend. Conditions don’t seem to have changed that much overall this week, as we are still seeing a mix of north and south swells coming through. As we enter the water on Saturday we will be entering during the upswing of the morning tidal change, so that should help out in choosing our dive site. Also, because the low tide is already over 2ft high that gives some extra padding to the levels. So at this point, the plans remain the same. Come on out and meet up at the usual spot and time. Newport Bay Entrance, Corona del Mar, California, 8/23/2008 3:03 AM 2.90 feet High Tide 5:23 AM Twilight begins 6:19 AM Sunrise 7:01 AM 2.37 feet Low Tide 2:27 PM 5.41 feet High Tide 7:27 PM Sunset 8:24 PM Twilight ends 10:41 PM 0.82 feet Low Tide So now that you know what’s in store, let’s go diving!!!
