Nahant is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located in Escanaba, MI 49829. This dive site has an average rating of 3.67 out of 5 from 3 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 16-20ft/5-6m. The average visibility is 16-20ft/5-6m.

The Nahant was a wooden cargo steamer that burned in 1897 torching the boat down to the waterline and also claiming approx.. 2 lives. The boat caught on fire on a frigid below zero night while it was tied to the escanaba ore docks also setting them ablaze. Due to the low movement of Iron ore the docks were never rebuilt. The boat was cut loose from the docks while afire and sank with the stern on the edge of the dropoff. Marked by the green bouy off of the Sand Point light house and the Escanaba municipal dock, this dive is a treat to the novice. If you stand on the front boiler, you will be waist deep in water while the stern sits at 20 feet with the dropoff going to 50. Park at the stalls at the end of Ludington street and enter by either shore or 10 foot drop from the south side if the dock and snorkel over. Make sure you are out towards the end of the dock when you dive off, the beginning is very shallow. You may find a bicycle near the dock.

This is a good shore dive to start the year with. Shallow depth and easy entry make it good dive to start off with. Still lots to see as the wreck is very large and interesting although in very shallow water. You can stand on deck railing and be only waist deep in the water. Usually see lots of fish around the wreck or peeking out from the weeds. Can also swim over to another wreck at this site, Called the Webber. It is also a fun dive.

I have done this dive several times and find something new each time. It is a shallow dive but still fun. Usually see lots of fish around the wreck and can usually find one peaking out the hole in the boiler. Fun shore dive to do.
