Aurora Reservoir - Aurora CO

Loading...
Aurora Reservoir is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located at 5800 S Powhaton Rd, Aurora, CO 80012. This dive site has an average rating of 3.08 out of 5 from 12 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 41-50ft/12-15m. The average visibility is 5-10ft/2-3m.

One of the local training sites in Colorado, this county park has a section set aside as a Dive Beach. To access it go to the main gate and they will give you a pass and you can put a deposit down on a key to the gate which will allow you to drop off your gear.

A float is still required despite being a dedicated beach (new rule started being enforced last year). Season runs from May 1st to October 1st.

There is a sunk Cessna out there with a marker buoy. Other than that, some crawdads and small fish is about what you will see. Depth in the dive beach area doesn’t go beyond 45 feet. If you go out further, it drops down to 80feet, but the park rangers get unhappy if they see you out there plus its really muck diving out there.

By CO standards I would rate it good. Fun to find the sunken plane. Not much else to see.

This location is great for training and for those divers who are desperate to get wet in Colorado.

Reservoir water is really clean. The site is so pleasant it makes up for the fair - poor viz. It is a great training spot and it is not unusual to be the only divers on site. It is possible to see a number of little critters and fish near sunken Cessna 310.

Get a key from the main entrance to open the SCUBA parking area. If not, it is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to SCUBA/swim area.

Go with a good Buddy. Silt is easily turned up here. In the summer you can dive this with a 7mm. Its not deep so expect long bottom time.

Participated in the annual underwater pumpkin carving contest sponsored by my dive club, Shark Bait Dive Club. Water was cold, visibility was almost zero (about 3 feet), but I loved being in the water.

For the best visibility dive during the week when there are few divers. If diving on the weekend when there are a lot of divers try to be the first to enter the water so the bottom isn’t disturbed.
