Lake Phoenix (previously Lake Rawlings) - Rawlings VA

Loading...
We are honored to be your host here in beautiful Brunswick County, Virginia where you will find one of the cleanest and clearest quarry’s in the mid-Atlantic region. Because of the water quality and the picturesque location in the small town of Rawlings, Lake Phoenix is a multi-purpose site that provides opportunities to swim, snorkel, kayak, and scuba dive. There are numerous roofed pavilions where divers can don and doff their gear. The newly improved restroom facility offers hot showers that will help divers stave off chills when they exit the water, especially during cold days.

Besides the water activities available, visitors can fully enjoy camping (RV sites with electricity), overnight rental trailers, picnic areas, and sand volleyball courts.

For visitors who simply want to enjoy nature and "get away from it all", the surrounding environment provides ample opportunities to rest and relax. Nature lovers may see an abundance of wild-life including beaver, turtles, deer, a wide variety of birds species, and squirrels. If you look close enough, you may even see the cow killer ant!

The water of the lake (quarry) itself is supplied by an active aquifer, and offers a spectacular underwater world with outstanding visibility, filled with colorful fish (bluegill and bass that we consider our pets; no fishing allowed), turtles, and crawfish. There are also amazing granite walls and underwater rock formations that will take your breath away.

Lake surface temperatures during the summer can exceed 80 degrees (f). There are distinct thermoclines that stay around 44 degrees (f), making wetsuits and drysuits necessary for divers who like exploring the deeper areas. Winter water temperatures can get below 50 degrees (f).

Numerous large objects have been submerged in the quarry (a plane, helicopter, several vans and buses, boats, etc.), giving divers interesting things to see and explore. There is a large posted dive map near the docks that will help orient you as you plan your dive to visit those attractions.

Groups and families alike will appreciate and fully enjoy our facility, making a visit to Lake Phoenix a perfect Virginia get-away and/or vacation spot!

7 mil suit meant I needed double the weights but it was chili near 50 depth and glad I had my hood. Normally don’t need it unless I go to the plane. Will wait a month or so before I go again.

Did my check out dives here in early May. The water was not as cold as you would think. I dived in a 7MM dive suit with out hood or gloves. I plan on going back in July to do some more training.

This is my first dive location after certification. Great place, great groups and nice lake diving since I have nothing to compare it to....yet. I will be back before it gets too cold.

Got my certificate here. Great place to dive this scuba and snorkeling only quarry. There’s a plane, helicopter, boats, buses and basketbal hoop with bowling balls to dunk . Plus you can camp and RV here . Great people

I just went back after my last trip in 2014, and I’m highly impressed with the changes. The staff are all pretty helpful, and very friendly. The diving was really good, even though vis was a little down (15’ at best). My dive buddy and I camped two nites on site, and spent a good amount of time in the water just exploring. I’ll definitely go back!

David Sliom and I checked out Lake Phoenix yesterday (5/22), and the experience did not disappoint. Visibility was amazing even with the huge crowd. Robert Grose and team are doing a superb job over there in terms of customer service and offering an increasingly pleasant place in which to dive.

I would like to dive here on Sunday (5-22-2016) and am looking for a buddy or perhaps a group I could join. Would also be interested in visiting some times mid-week if I can find a dive buddy. Thanks!

Best visibility, any quarry, anywhere ... 20 feet on a bad day. Lots to see, whether you’re into artifacts (planes, autos, etc) or topography. Best inland dive in Northern Virginia.
