On May 8, 1916, the ocean liner Philadelphian collided with the Fire Island lightship, causing heavy damage, followed by the sinking of the lightship, or so was reported. It seems that the Fire Island Lightship was only slightly damaged and tow to Staten Island NY where full repairs were made. It wasn’t until 1986, when diver Mac Weiss surfaced with the ships windlass cover that the wreck was identified.
Known as the Madagascar, a 243 foot wood hulled inland freighter, built 1894 in West Bay MI. Her name was changed in 1907 to Kenosha, before foundering on July 24, 1909. The Kenosha was carrying a cargo of coal and had a crew of twelve when she sank
This wreck located 10 miles out of Fire Island Inlet lies in 110 feet of water, has a very good reputation for divers producing large lobsters. For most lobster divers, this wreck is a favorite stop while on the high seas. Five pound lobsters are common place on her and lobsters up to twenty pounds have been seen.
