Holbox - Mexico

Loading...
Holbox is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in QR, Mexico. This dive site has an average rating of 4.00 out of 5 from 2 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 11-15ft/3-5m. The average visibility is 26-30ft/8-9m.

Not really a dive site as Mexican law doesn’t allow the use of scuba here but a lot of divers do a side trip from Coz or PDC to snorkel with the whale sharks and mantas that come here during the summer to feed in the plankton rich water, being plankton rich means 20-30’ vis.

This is a long bus and ferry ride from PDC so allow the better part of a day each way and a day or two for snorkeling. Fishing boats do the hour run out to the site in the morning, two snorkelers and a guide who is there to make sure you don’t touch or ride the whalesharks slide into the water and then you swim your legs off, you might want to invest in a dry snorkel as you will be breathing hard. Wear a shorty or vest, other wise you will need to don a lifejacket and that will really slow you down and prevent you from getting down for a better look.

These are smaller whale sharks than the Galapagos where you see mainly schoolbus size pregnant females, Holbox seems to be mostly smaller males. While waiting our turn to get into the water we counted 22 feeding on the surface although some of those may have been Mantas.

Holbox is a small fishing village where the main mode of transportation is a golf cart, there are a few places to eat (the lobster pizza is good), gift shops, one ice cream store that is really a house and little night life. Three days here will run you about US$400 including transportation from PDC.

I am being told to go see the whale sharks out of Cancun as opposed to Holbox. I am planning a trip to Cozumel next summer and am looking for advice to do this. I have been emailing Blue H2O Cozumel Watersports and they claim to do this in a day trip. http://padiowsi.wix.com/blueh2ocozumel#!whalesharks/c21or
