Shark Diver-“Noblesse Oblige”
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:54 AM
There’s an old French saying “NoblesseOblige". It roughly translates in to Nobel Obligation. Those that are on the front lines of an issue and can effect change have a nobel obligation to do so. Which gets us to the state of commercial shark diving worldwide. The industry is valued at $200-300 million dollars and for the most part, operators are content to show divers sharks, make money and repeat. Without a doubt the current state of “NoblesseOblige"in our industry is at an all time low. Let me...
GEERG-You want to dive with the Greenland Shark?
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:52 AM
Canada is fast becoming the "land of sharks" and none more sexy than the ice cold Greenland Shark. Turns out an estimated 100 million sharks live off Canada’s shores...good luck seeing any of them as the waters here tend to run from pea soup to Beijing smog on a good day. We blogged about this unlikely critter a few months ago and now would like to introduce you to the cutting edge guys who make shark diving with these cold water animals a reality: The mission of GEERG is to study the Greenland ...

sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:51 AM
Jupp Kerckerinck-you probably do not know the name but you should get to know the website www.sharkprotect.com Outside a few well funded NGO’s and commercial shark diving operations few people have the time, energy and finances, to put into web projects that raise awareness and push for shark conservation. This is what makes Shark Protect so extraordinary. We’ll let Jupp explain how he came to create a world class shark conservation site and how he is now rapidly becoming a recognized name in th...
Isla Guadalupe-Shark Diver Jeff Cannada Review
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:48 AM
With two of our vessels completing their final day in the North Bay today it would seem for now the turmoil of the last few weeks has settled down to quick and thorough vessel inspections by the MX Navy and happy divers. Here’s another diver review from last weeks adventures with Shark Diver aboard the MV Islander: Hi Patric, I just wanted to tell you that my recent shark diving adventure really exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I was a little concerned about safety not only of the great w...
Scuba Diving Magazine-Guadalupe Coverage
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:46 AM
Editor Travis Marshall with Scuba Diving Magazine broke the Isla Guadalupe chumming controversy in September. In the next few months more articles about this ongoing declaration and controversy with the MX Navy banning chumming at this pristine site will be forthcoming. Our goal is to keep divers informed and direct the conversation into sustainable solutions. If this unique dive site is to survive and flourish cross border cooperation and unified direction will have to happen here. The options ...
Terrible Day For Sharks
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:44 AM
Mark Addison runs Blue Wilderness shark diving in theAilwal Shoal Marine Protected Area. Today was a dark day for Tiger shark conservation at that site as he and his team discovered three stunning animals caught in fisherman’s nets. One of the smaller animals was "rescued" by Mark but the blow to this dive site is something you cannot even begin to imagine. We’ll keep you updated as to the next steps to be taken here. Overall it’s been a tough week for sharks, highlighting the global need from A...
Spectacular Discovery 27 Great Whites Y.O.Y
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:41 AM
One of the things about the ocean you come to love, the very real chance for discovery. Unlike 90% of our terrestrial environment almost every month we discover new things about our ocean environment that challenge perceptions, and make you excited to be part of the planet. Today was one of those days: WHAT could be the world’s largest concentration of juvenile great white sharks has been discovered swimming within metres of the sand on the state’s Mid-North Coast.Twenty-seven great white sharks...
Octo-Podi-Don’t dump your meds in the ocean
sharkdiver73 - 11/03/2008 9:40 AM
This is what you get when you dump your expired meds into your sink a 96 armed sea critter (Octopus vulgaris). Note the helpful lab tech who’s pointing out one of the arms. Sadly this critter did not survive long at the ShimaMarineland Aquarium One alternate theory is that this fellow suffered a tragic accident and had a "gross regeneration event" causing the many arms....
Ensenada Fish Market, Mexico Y.O.Y
sharkdiver73 - 10/02/2008 5:33 PM
We blogged about this a few months ago-apparent white shark young of the year being sold at the Ensenada Fish Market as "swordfish and marlin". This month we ventured back down to the Ensenada Fish Market looking for evidence of more pups on sale. While we did not find any pups for the first time in three years, we did discover a series of shark carcass without skins being sold as "swordfish and marlin". Perhaps we made a difference, but we think not. Our contact in Ensenda who works with the lo...
Great White Shark-Bahamas
sharkdiver73 - 6/25/2008 7:57 PM
At the start of this week we got a strange email from the Bahamas-a Great White had washed ashore off Grand Bahama. "Several of Unexso staff including Christina & Veronica heard about it and went out and shot the pictures below. They heard the shark was chasing bait fish and leaped out of the water landing on a shallow ledge as the tide was going out. They checked the stomach and it was empty. This happened in XXX which is the town XXX of the port on the way to XXX." Of course we did a little di...
New Zeland Great White Shark Diving?
sharkdiver73 - 6/25/2008 7:55 PM
It’s been a well known secret that the Foveaux Strait in New Zealand is home to some very big and very prolific Great Whites. Now for the first time, a team has set up a serious commercial venture to take divers there run by the Great White Southern Dive Company (website coming soon). Blessed with Isla Guadalupe like conditions, 100 foot visibility, and more sharks than you can shake a stick at. We’ll cautiously predict this site will be the next great Shark Mecca for those seeking an encounter ...
Shark Trust Wines-Sharky Good Vino
sharkdiver73 - 6/25/2008 7:53 PM
Our friends at Shark Trust Wines asked us to provide a testimonial for their website. For the past few years we have fully supported the efforts of this scrappy little wine company to spread the word about sharks and shark conservation...oh, and it’s great wine as well: When we first "discovered" Shark Trust Wines I was excited about the prospects of a "wine company with a conscience". Traditionally wines focus on the message of the wine. Here was one that focused on the understanding and knowle...

sharkdiver73 - 6/25/2008 10:38 AM

Thanks to the sharp eyes of blog reader "Samir" we were notified this morning of this recent shark travesty on eBay. This is what you think it is and as it turns out it is not illegal in the USA to sell white shark jaws and teeth. If this item is still up on eBay you can find it here: Monster White Shark Jaws The current bidding is $1750 USD but will always go much higher if left to market driven buyers. The last set of jaws we saw on eBay a few years ago was a $5000 prior to our email campaign....

6 Gill Shark:Rare Find 6 Gill Shark:Rare Find
sharkdiver73 - 1/30/2008 5:02 PM
It`s not every day you happen to be walking along the beach and discover a Six Gill Shark. Normally you find these critters at depths up to 1500` and greater. The Six Gills we have encountered were typically shy, rare, and amazing animals to see in person. These ancient sharks have spiked and serrated teeth that rip and tear the meat off of whatever dead animal drifts down to the cold dark depths. You can only imagine this guys surprise when a 9 foot beast washed up on his local beach this week:...
Sand Tigers:Hit Men of The Aquarium Sand Tigers:Hit Men of The Aquarium
sharkdiver73 - 1/30/2008 4:43 PM
We have a lot of respect for big Aquariums. It`s not easy maintaining all that diverse underwater wildlife inside 300,000 gallons of saltwater. Ever tried to maintain a goldfish? Then again, you`ll have have to shake your head harder than a Sand Tiger with a fresh kill in it`s mouth when you see this next video. Yesterday at the Mall of America in the World`s Largest Underground Aquarium a Sand Tiger took out a perfectly good White Tip. We called Steve Blair assistant curator of the Aquarium of ...
