The picturesque island of Duck Key rests 90 miles south of Miami between Islamorada and Marathon. Surround your soul on 60 acre private island resort with charming villas, lush landscaping, restaurants, salt water beach lagoon, dolphin encounters, swimming pools, full service spa and marina.
Three and one half miles south of Duck Key the remains of a nameless steamer went down at the turn of the century and lies scattered in a patch reef area. Four large stacks 50 feet long and 30 inches in diameter are easily spotted. Fish life is abundant on the remains of this 25 foot deep wreck and reef.
The Thunderbolt is located just 4.8 nm off Key Colony Beach in 118 feet of water, sitting majestically upright on the ocean floor. She was built by the U.S. Army and commissioned the USS. Randolph in 1942. During the Second World War she served as a cable layer and minesweeper. The Thunderbolt is 188 feet in length, 37 feet in beam and has a top to bottom relief of 45 feet. Maximum depth at the propellers is 120 feet and the top of the superstructure is at 77 feet.
