Here’s one:

MYTH: Diving is a very dangerous activity.

TRUTH: When the knowledge and skills you learn during a scuba diving course are applied properly and regurlarly, diving is safe and fun. Scuba diving has an impressive safety record that continues to improve with better training and more advanced scuba gear.

MYTH: Diving in California waters is cold and non-colorful.

TRUTH: Wear a 7 mil wetsuit for the 60-70 degree water and bring a dive light and I’ll show you as much color and variety in sea life in my own backyard than I have seen within any tropical reef system. In fact, when I’m on vacation at a tropical destination, I love the new experience, but I usually yearn to be back home diving in my local kelp forests :-)

MYTH: There is no such things as Mermaids.

TRUTH: I recently got my wife scuba certified :-)

That is the sweetest thing! I agree, Mermaids are in they eye of the beholder.

MYTH: you’re too old to start scuba diving.

TRUTH: while I wish I started at a younger age, I’m here to tell you you’re never too old.

California diving is beautiful, love the color but where is that 60-70 degree water?! I did my first Channel Island trip in a 7 mil and found 49 degree water, the following year I added a 3 mil hooded vest to the suite, I was warmer but so was the water on the bottom, 54!

Myth: Don’t go swimming within one hour of eating. I believe this old wives tale was to keep the kids out of the water for a rest, both kids and mom because divers are always eating during the SI. In California something hot to warm the body :)

Okay. I digress. The water is typically 60-70 degrees from May through November. During the winter we see temps in the 50-60 range. Sometimes at depth you can hit 49. The coldest I’ve dove is 47 into a thermocline. So I hereby amend my TRUTH statement to read "during Spring and Summer" ;-)

Myth: Inland lake diving is not as interesting as the ocean.

Truth: Find the wrecks or what was flooded when the man made lakes were built.

Beaver Lake, AR.: 60’ deep old farmstead with the house foundation, coral posts, yoke for a horse or ox team, cellar that the roof has collapsed and still has homemade glass jars of canned goods on the few remaining shelves.

Lake Mead, NV.: B-29 that was testing the heat seeker for present day air to air missiles.

Eielson AFB, AK: B-29 Lady of the Lake, an old B-29 that the base commander wanted out of his site, got towed to the frozen over lake during the winter. When the ice melted they found out the lake was not deep enough to completely submerge the plane.

I’m sure others can add to the list but you must look and behold the beauty that is there, it just may be different than what you are accustomed to.

I’ve actually become a better swimmer because of diving.

I have become much more comfortable in the water, in or out of scuba gear.
