I am active in the Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) here in the Florida keys. I have been asked a few times how to get involved with this fantastic way to give back to our hobby and help our reefs. Below are links to the CRF here in the Florida Keys, Curacao and Bonaire with the dive shops involved along with their Facebook page. You can participate as an individual or part of a group.

When I was recently in Curacao NA I learned that Ken Nedimyer, founder and president of CRF here in Key Largo, went to Ocean Encounters Curacao and got them started. Ken brought down the materials needed to get their own staghorn coral nursery successfully started. A team from Ocean Encounters dive shop went to CRF Bonaire to get trained by their team.

When I was in Curacao I met one of the founding members of CRFC team and I have planned a dive with them to plant staghorn coral when I return in December for 2 weeks. I did not learn Bonaire had their own CRF until after I left and was in Curacao but next trip to Bonaire I will dive in with them.

You don’t have to dive to participate, all of CRF is 100% non profit and fully depend on donations and volunteer divers. You do get a PADI coral restoration diver 1 specialty cert for your 1 day of training and dive work. Then if you go somewhere that has their own CRF you can dive in to do this very rewarding work to help our reefs.
