Diver verification system on DiveBuddy.

Another member came up with this idea (http://www.divebuddy.com/profile.aspx?MemID=6020), but what do you all think about a diver verification system on DiveBuddy.com?

I can have members send in a close-up photo of themselves with their dive certification card and other identification. Then once I review the photo, if everything looks legit, I mark that member as verified and it adds something to their profile that indicates that.

What do you think?

Hey Greg! I thinks it’s a pretty good idea, besides what’s the harm!

I am not sure why you need the diver verification. Is there some problem with people misrepresenting themselves?

I don’t see any point to this. My buddy list is limited to people I have already dived with or am positively sure I will in the future. If I was putting together a project team, I’d require everyone to send in their qualifications off-line, anyway. There are plenty of suspicious members at DiveBuddy.com, but I don’t see any safety or financial risk in allowing them to dive vicariously on-line.
On the other hand, the whole point system deserves an overhaul, and I’ll reserve my thoughts until the topic surfaces again.

I like to talk to new and wont tobe divers too. Most of us can tell who is a diver and who is a wonttobe. I am a won tobe that did it and now am. Dreamers are ok in my book.

I don’t think it is inportent to prove it. You and well fine out in time.

My only issue is the amount of private information available on those cards that I don’t want on the internet, like SSN

If you dont trust who you dive with dont I dont think thats needed at all on divebuddy thats between you and your buddy Im sure sure people have better things to do then scan peoples c-cards that would be like scuba police if someone wants to no your business ask......thats how you make buddys by the way I wear black socks if anyone wants to no!!!!!

I dont think we need to have that. most of us wont ever meet and the ones we do, we will find out real quick if they are not divers. Besides, what about the snorklers??? That is a group we should also allow/recruit into this site. Especially if you own a dive shop or resort. Lets get those people and lets not let them feel like outsiders. This may make people want to learn to dive and let the ones who are unable to dive live through our experiences and us their. This is a fun and friendly site. Lets keepit that way

I like how some members expressed themselves. I do not feel that this site needs to take on the position of verification. If you want to verify whom you are diving with then do it before you dive. This site has taken care of where to find dive buddies, now you either trust your buddy or check them out before you dive with them. As one member put it " you will find out real quick who can dive and who cannot " !

So for me, No verification needed to be a member of this site.

Well, Greg would VERIFY it and give us a cute little icon stating that we are verified. No harm in that. No info would be leaked online, Greg ONLY would view it and make the note online.

Since, this is a DIVE site primarily for certified divers and people wishing to me.

Maybe we could have a SOON TO BE DIVERS area or something.

If people are faking being divers, then it is kind of like the singles’ sites (if women are seeking women) where men are pretending to be women to stalk women etc. I also used to belong to Cafe Mom (whatta joke!) where men would pose as women.

I know my photo isn’t divey right now, it is hard to really SEE a person when they are in full on dive gear!

I do think, it would be nice if everyone would put at least ONE CLEAR FACESHOT or HEADSHOT, so we could see them. I am sure looks don’t matter, but it is nice when trying to get to know someone. Especially if we plan to meet up with them on a trip, if we are going by the shot of them covered up or a little speck in their profile pic then we will NEVER FIND THEM! lol

There is another way to accomplish this without the requirement to send in ID, which in the age of ID theft may seem too risky for most folks. PADI has a Dive Check and Pro Check features on the PADI PROs web-site. While you do have to be an active PADI Pro to use the sight, every PADI diver and Pro can be verified there. NAUI and SSI have similar features and the others may as well. That covers most of us. Then all you need is name and dob, or diver number.
