I think that is a great idea. I would love to be able to go daily to a Southern California page for example to see what is up locally. And when I make a trip to Florida I can visit their region.

So do you think a region like "Southern California" is good enough OR should I break it down further to major metropolitan areas in SoCal?

And on that note, should the areas be content specific or member specific? For example, should an area be defined for each photo, forum topic, calendar event, etc? OR should the area be set based on a member’s current location and all content from that member show up in that area going forward?

Greg,
In my opinion, i would start it regionally and let it evolve from there.
if people support and use it and the need develops to refine it down, then you always have that ability. i think if you make it so big and cumbersome that it may overwhealmpeople somewhat. i agree with my socal friend, some regions like florida, texas and california would warrant the own section, then to southeast, northeast, etc...

If I understand you completely I think area specific would be better. If you want to see what ABC diver is up to you would find photos and info from his local dives as well as his recent vacation, which might get confusing if you were to see photos of tropical fish in California for example. But if you wanted to see who has been diving in Laguna Beach lately......
As for how specific the region should be, I can only speak for So.Cal. Here most divers seem to dive predominantly the same areas over and over, and occasionally make road trips. Perhaps you could break it down by County? San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Central Coast, and even a separate listing for the Channel Islands.

Saw on the news that Southern California wants to be the 51st. state.
Be careful breaking the board up into too many topics, that’s the reason I don’t go to scubaboard anymore and only visit TheCyberDiver once a day. Way too much clicking to find out what’s going on. ScubaDiving.com’s Diver2Diver, my favorite went the other way, back to the old style message board where everything is on one page.

If I created regions that content could be placed into, I would still default to the grouped look first, then give members the option to filter content by region.

Hey Greg, Sounds like a good idea. I like the TX, OK, AR, and LA being in the South Central area. With as many lakes in TX and AR and the Gulf coasts of TX and LA I believe that these are sectioned appropriately. However, I am curious if you will be recruiting for assistance in a localized area that has abundant water activities.

I love the idea of breaking things into regions. I would recomend (as mentioned before) breaking into larger regions like southeast northeast etc and let the progress of the site and members activity evolve into a deeper subsection.
