DIVEGIRL55-RECENTLY SUBMITED A SURVEY,SMOKING AND DIVING.I would like to respond here since I cannot do so on the survey site,or can I ?never the less, I for one EXTREAMLY ENJOY a good smoke! if you have NEVER smoked then I can’t explain to you the joys of tobacco. it must be enjoyed/experienced for yourself to fully understand.yes it is ADDICTING, as well as calming and pleasurable, I have been manufacturing my own cigar-ettes for over 15yrs now,I blend a little turkish and domestic american as well as some pipe tobacco in each cigar-ette.some anti smoking NAZI’S will tell others that smoking is the devil incarnate! but dont’ judge anything /or anyone on others tesimony...live it before you judge it !!if some anti-smoker is offended by my passive smoke TELL ME I have no problem putting the offending article out until a later time, its called COMMON CURTESY something we all could use more of !

I REALIZE THAT IT IS BAD FOR MY HEALTH! however, I prefer the QUALITY of life then the quantity!! a parapaligic would NOT want to live 100yrs if he would not be able to change his lot in life.. WE ALL will die!! from what ? only god knows!! therefore- I choose to enjoy a damn good maduro cigar a damn good bottle of rum and a damn good wench when I find her !!!

I am a reformed smoker, but I still cheat occasionally and I agree with you. It was something that had to bedone to see if it is worth it and some enjoy it while some like me the experince was not all it’s cracked up to be. I feel if you smoke after diveing as long as yopu do it with respect for those that don’t go for it is your body!

Also the RUM and Wench Hell YAAA!

Keep diving all the buddies out there

So a simple drug addiction is what makes you happy.. DiverGirl didn’t stepped on your toes. You shouldn’t be so defensive on the issue..Unless there is a problem..
You mentioned the quality of life.. Why? Maybe I am doing it all wrong? Try to set me straight on this.. So is it all about self pleasure. As long as it feels good at the moment. Then later Family,Children and Friends can take care of me during my premature, self inflicted, long term slow certain death..
Is this the path your saying that I should take??

hmmm, someone brought to my attention that my name was mentioned in conjunction to this post.

I merely posted a survey (like so many others do) based on my observations and my own thoughts. What people do to their bodies is really NONE of my business, nor could I really care how quickly or slowly people choose to kill themselves.

It just appears very oxymoronic to mix bad air (smoke) with good air (pure oxygen). But as aforementioned, I have never smoked (and never will), therefore I couldn’t possibly understand what it is like to fall prey to marketing and putting big black holes in my lungs like Swiss cheese.

You are obviously a proud smoker. As you should be! Just like I am proud of being a non-smoker! I have more important things to do than try to convince smokers what they are doing is bad/wrong/stupid etc. etc. Because by the time I track them all down they will be talking through a hole in their throat or dead. So really, time can be better spent helping others and doing good in the world.

The only time I get irked is when a smoker’s rudeness comes across, by thinking that the entire planet is theirs to pollute and drag others into their filthy habit by lighting up wherever they darn please.

And BTW, my stepfather is a chain smoker and I have ZERO respect for him either!!!

I grew up in a household with both parents smoking 2 packs a day of Lucky Strike unfiltered. I started smoking by the time I was 13.

My mother died at age 39 of cancer of both the lung and brain. This didn’t stop either my father or myself from smoking.

My father had his first heart attack and triple bypass at age 50 it stopped his smoking for a couple of years before he started again.

I still smoked until I started to notice the affect it was having on my health at age 38. At this time I started dating my wife who had never smoked and I took the opportunity to quit it’s been 8 years since and I no longer miss it at all.

My father continued to smoke with the same statement about quality vs quantity. He passed on 2.5 years ago at the age of 68 he had another heart attack in my driveway.

His father lived happily to the age of 84 and I met my great grandmother when she was 102.

All of my fathers non smoking relative were health deep into their 80s some into their 90s

If cigarettes are boosting your quality of life enough not to give them up on the chance that the quality of your life may improve in the future then may I suggest that your life may be so bad that maybe you should consider other options.

I used to smoke as well when I was younger. I quite smoking about 5 years ago right after my divorce. And the fact that I am in the medical proffession and see the chest x-rays, the patients up close and personnel who are dying on a regular basis. I have seen the corpses and cadavers who used to be smokers and the actual tar you can squeeze out of their lungs. I have seen the effect it has on the body, your freinds and family which makes me really not miss it anymore either. Suffice it to say, you dont see the damage it does to your body, but after you stop smoking you can taste food agian, smell fragrances and you actually feel better agian after a few weeks and your body has started to cleanse itself.

Smoke and be proud, it’s your choice! But do your family a favor and don’t ask them to be with you when you’re dieing because your drowning on the phlegm filling up your lungs. Trust me, it’s not pretty and it’s not the picture you want them to have everytime they think of you.

I started smoking when I was 13 as well. But started smoking heavily (more than 1 pack a day) in 1993. Quit when I was 20 years old, and started back 7 years later. Now, the longest I can seem to quit for is about 3 months at a time.

I realise however, that if I ever want to enjoy years longer of scuba diving, especially as a Rescue Diver, I should put my own health ahead of others first... because really, how can I care for someone else if I cannot care for myself?

Bonnielynn - 2/11/2009 12:03 PM

I started smoking when I was 17. I quit at the age of 34 (in 1984)....I was up to 3 packs a day. I couldnt put my feet on the floor in the morning without lighting up. I would go into the ashtray of my car and smoke on crumbled up cigs while driving to the store to get more. I would light them off of each other. My boys would ask me time and time again to quit. One day I did. Just out of the blue I decided that I was bigger than that little white cigarette. I threw away an unopened pack and have never had another one again. Thats not saying that once in awhile somone will light up and the smell is so good.......and other times the smell disgusts me.

I never give my opinion on whether someone should smoke or not. I just know that for me, I made the wrong choice by starting and the right choice by quitting.

I’m a smoker!!!!

Granted my air consumption is a tad worse, but that I’m going to blame on being a bit unfit and a newbie diver. (leave me to my delusion please)

HOWEVER, I don’t smoke on boats or around a group of non smokers if I am the only smoker. I also don’t smoke in a non smokers house, car, etc etc. I also don’t litter my cigarette butts and I will never kiss my boyfriend if I’ve just smoked or if I’m with him at home, even if it is my house. (he’s a non-smoker). I limit myself to social smoking then.

I like to think I’m a dam considerate smoker!
Oh, and I drink like a fish.....

In Sweden - and on the internet - you can buy something called "snus". It is almost like shewing tobacco, but you just put it under your lip without shewing it. The nicotine goes directly in to your blood, throw the thin skin under your lip.

It is still tobacco, but you can use it anywhere: airplains, boats, hospitals, while diving, in the bedroom... where ever! There is no smoke. So this is the solution for me living with a smoker. When my partner uses snus I am happy. When he smokes... urk!!!!

See what I reallt talking about here, at this link from YouTube, it is an instruction movie:

Ok, here’s one I’ll jump in on. I go to the gym three times a week, I run when the weather cooperates, I watch what I eat, I stay as active as I can, and I smoke. A pack-a-day habit for me since they were less than $2 a pack. Does it bother me? Sometimes. Does it affect my air consumption? I’m sure it does, somewhat. Do I care? No, not at all. I, like many others, enjoy a cigarette after a good meal, with a cup of coffee, and many other times. I’m comfortable with it, so please, please, please stop telling me how bad it is for me, I know that already! It’s my choice, just like everything else in life. My grandparents smoked well into their 80’s without lung cancer, my parents are smoking into their 60’s without lung cancer. Now keep in mind I’m a courteous smoker, I’ll go outside when I have to, I don’t smoke while people are eating, things like that. But don’t ever come up to me while I’m sitting somewhere enjoying my cigarette and ask me to put it out, because I will, and you will not like how I do it...

Also , ANYONE that has had the pleasure of seeing the BODYWORLDS exhibit tour, would QUICKLY (and I mean: QUICKLY) smash their ciggys on the floor once they saw the cancerous black Swiss cheese lungs on smokers they prominently displayed!

If not, I suggest you google BODYWORLDS and find the SMOKERS’ LUNGS asap!

Ok, to elaborate on what I said earlier. I dont have a problem with people smoking. All I have asked is that they please dont do it around others who object to it as a common courtesy. All smokers I know are very understanding of that. And Yes I have been to the bodies exhibit and it very impressive. When I first went into the Military I used to smoke, dip, chew and sniff. I pretty much had to do it all to stay awake/sane while I was Infantry. The way I found to quite was to use dip pouches and I found I could quite my nicotene habit easily that way. Like I said, I have no problems with smokers, its their body, not mine. It is my choice if I choose to go into a bar that has smoking in it.

now that all the verbal diarrhea has asserted itself, allow me to retort !(that means respond-milwwreckdiver-matt65-nediver-scubadad-divegirl55)-reading comprehension was NOT A STRONG SUBJECT FOR YOU ALL WAS IT ??-IF you would have read my post as INTENDED you would have noticed the words-AS FOR ME-I CHOOSE and IT IS MY CHOICE ! but instead you all decided to bash bush-uuummm I mean me !

my post WAS meant to be a simple explanation as to her survey, but instead turned out to be a an anti smoker feeding frenzy.

I am most grateful to granitehawk-bgdmrngr-rawwalker-Iscuba-bonnielynn-PIXEL -magdalyna-jswantek-who had the decorum to answer this piticular

subject with their informed/adult attitudes, they did NOT use epitaphs or demeaning language to express their opinions !!

as for the former five mentioned earlier, I promised greg that I would try to keep my responses, short sweet and dive related...I cannot tell you what I really would love to say to you. HOWEVER, I will say what I can.

matt65: yeah babe they clang when I walk..you should not be surprised at ANYTHING I post !!oh btw wether you chew it or smoke it-its still the same tobacco. at least Im not a hypocrite !!

scubadad: I wish you ALL the luck in the world,to continue to be smoke free, but please dont’ call yourself a non smoker until you have been smoke free for at least a year !! GOOD LUCK

nediver: it IS my choice-not my families !

milwwreckdiver:the word you were searching for was STEP, not stepped.

and yes IT IS all about self pleasure,- its called FREEDOM OF CHOICE ! ever hear of it ??

and last, but not least !: divegirl55:I would like to know what makes’ you think that you need to spend time converting me to NOT smoke??

helping others? doing GOOD in the world??- maybe to smash my ciggys on the floor? what other kinds of propaganda do you suggest??

heres one.. I will tell you what’s oxymoronic! to believe that the earth EVER had PURE oxygen ! we breath 21% oxygen at any given time, there has NOT been pure oxy EVER on this planet !! NOT even during it’s formation!

IN CONCLUSION::: I would like to end this debate with a single thought,

WE ALL make choices in this life that are ours, wether we decide to follow or lead- good or bad-right or wrong-the choice is ours, WE have got to live with those choices we make.

DON’T LIVE BY THE CHOICES OTHER HAVE MADE FOR YOU!!

Showing your true colors again eh scubasmitty? You lambaste people for not reading fully your posting, saying that they don’t get the meaning of the posting, yet you posted the above quote? Did you really read and understand what I wrote in response to your posting??? Did I even once try to convert you to be a non smoker? Did I once say what bad things smoking does to your health??? Did I AT ALL say ANYTHING about how you shouldn’t smoke??? No I didn’t!!! All I said was that the Dive Buddy forum was NOT the PROPER place for such a ranting!!! Yes, I do use chewing tobacco, and yes I do know it is bad for me. It is also true that I hate it and wish to quit. There was NO HIPOCROCY in my initial reply to your original postina AT ALL. So do the world a favor and get off your "Proud to be a smoker" soapbox, at least when it comes to posting topics in a forum that is for SCUBA DIVING!!! Not smoking! Feel free to start up your own weg site, perhaps something like www.smokebuddy.com, and proudly announce that you are a smoker, that you make your own, and how you totally enjoy your smokes. Hell, you do that and even I might stop by and make a posting about smokeing and or chewing. But I do promise, that if you do make such a web site, not one of my forum postings will have anything to do wioth diving!!! All that having been said scubasmitty, I wish you well. Take care and dive safe.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who smokes and who doesn’t.
It’s about respecting each other and each others choices.
And I know that smokers will respect non-smokers when in their company.

However once we’re all under the water it makes no difference.
We all have a commonality due to the sport we practice and love.

At 30m deep, if someone runs out of air, I know that you will share your air with that person even if they are a smoker and you are not.

Thanks for the fix iScuba :P

Call me naive, but I believe that even though everybody has voiced their opinions, for or against, no matter how heated, we’d all still come together and have an awesome time diving, socializing.

It’s what makes life interesting and fun.

I started smoking at the age of 11yrs (hanging with the big boys) and continued to do so until 1994. Regardless of how I began I did. for years I tried to quit for every reason with the exception of the one I needed to quit for (me). When my daughter turned 16, I promised her I would quit and cry when I could not. I never smoked in the house nor did I let my daughter see me smoke and thought I was doing a good thing! I was and still am an avid excerciser and try to keep in decent shape. I really didn’t want to believe that I would succome to the effects I knew would eventually come until I could no longer break a 21 minute three mile. Once this truth set in I, still could not stop despite my faith and conscience pounding on me daily. I tried patches, hypnotism, gum, nothing worked.
On fathers day my daughter gave me a CD containing a song "Butterfly Kisses". A story of a relationship between a father and his daughter and in the song he (Bob Carlisle) sings of walking his daughter down the isle!
Simply put I wanted to be there to walk her down the isle giving her "Butterfly Kisses" as I gave her to her husband!
I want to live as long as I can to love and counsel her, to watch the growth of my grand children "Mostest Handsomest" and the new addition "Peanut Butter". I wanted to do this for me. I could be talk out, harrassed out, scared out or intellected out of this habit; but I could be loved out!
I feel for my brothers and sisters who want out and find it so difficult. I pass no judgement on my brothers and sisters who enjoy tabacco for I too enjoyed it’s taste and effects for most of my adult life.
We know the truths’ of it’s affects and we choose to stay with it or fight our way out; either way I’ll dive with any of you anytime, anywhere smoke free or not!
Dive Well!

I smoked for over 25 years and really loved it too. When I started, it wasn’t a social fau paux to smoke. There was still smoking on planes. I quit 3 months ago and really don’t miss it. The OP mentioned quality of life and that was finally obvious to me that I was losing quality of life. 2 dive trips ruined from chronic bronchitis. I’ve had enough.

I was never a rude smoker. I don’t even like to smoke in my own house and would never smoke where it blatently would offend someone. Well, within reason. If I am outside and the wind is blowing away from you and you are 15ft away....sorry if my presence offends you. And it always surprised me when friends would announce that I was not welcome to smoke in their car or home when I never asked to.

As for other smokers, I don’t really care if others do. I don’t hang out in bars or heavy smoke resteraunts. My only complaint about any smokers is the friend who I wanted to come visit my parents house for the day. We were going to have a BBQ, go out on the boat tubing, and ride jet skies. All I asked was she not smoke in front of them. My parents don’t like it. She couldn’t go an hour without a smoke. So, she didn’t go.

And for the OP, I didn’t bother with your 2nd posting after you disregarded all of the other posts as verbal diareahh. Shocking how ironic considering your post.

Funny how times change, I remember back in the 70’s & early 80’s, youd see alot of professional sports players with cigarettes in their mouths. but back then it was politically correct!! what is politically correct now???? then again owning a Harley makes me politically incorrect too!! so just live & let live!
